Not all cutting boards are built the same. The way the wood is oriented affects durability, maintenance, knife friendliness, and appearance. Here’s a quick comparison to help you choose the board that’s right for your kitchen.
The Premium Choice
Ideal for serious home cooks and anyone who spends a lot of time preparing meals.
Why Choose End Grain?
The wood fibers stand vertically, allowing the surface to absorb knife impacts and naturally "self-heal" over time. End grain boards are exceptionally durable and are often considered the gold standard for cutting boards.
Our Most Popular Style
The perfect balance of durability, beauty, and value for everyday use.
Why Choose Edge Grain?
Built from long hardwood strips, edge grain boards offer an excellent balance of durability, beauty, and value. They're dependable, easy to maintain, and ideal for everyday use.
Built for Presentation
An excellent choice for serving, entertaining, and showcasing beautiful hardwood grain.
Why Choose Face Grain?
Face grain boards highlight the widest surface of the wood, revealing its most striking natural figure. While they're beautiful enough for everyday use, they're especially popular as serving and charcuterie boards where appearance takes center stage.
Every Ingison Woodworks cutting board starts with carefully selected hardwoods chosen for strength, durability, and natural beauty. Walnut, maple, and cherry are used as the foundation of our designs, with select accent woods added for contrast and character.
Each board is built with function first. The thickness, layout, wood selection, and finish are all chosen to create a board that feels solid, looks timeless, and holds up to real kitchen use.
What goes into every board:
A hardwood cutting board does not need complicated care, but it does need the right care. With a few simple habits, your board can stay strong, clean, and beautiful for years.
Clean with mild soap and warm water after use. Never place a wood cutting board in the dishwasher.
Wipe the board dry and let it stand upright so air can reach both sides.
Apply food-safe mineral oil weekly. Use a generous amount of oil and spread evenly, allow to completely absorb before use.
Most of our cutting boards are made to order, crafted one at a time with the wood species, size, and design you choose. Every so often, we’ll create a one-off piece in the shop just to explore new patterns or ideas — and those unique boards are also available when inspiration strikes. Either way, you’re getting a board built with intention, not mass production.
Our most popular boards are built to order — meaning you pick the style, size, and wood combination, and we craft it for you. From bold end-grain cubes to classic edge-grain stripes, these proven designs look as good as they perform. And once in a while, you’ll find a one-of-a-kind board we made just because the idea was too good not to try. Whether it’s a repeat favorite or an original, you’ll get a handmade piece designed to last.
If you want something completely unique, we’ll create a custom build from the ground up. Select your wood species, size, and pattern, or simply tell us how you want your board to feel in your kitchen. We’ll guide you through options and craft a piece that’s one of a kind. Your board won’t just be a tool — it’ll be your own piece of functional art, designed around you.
A: Since each board is handcrafted by a single craftsman, production isn’t instant. Most orders are completed within about a month, allowing time for careful design, precise cutting, glue-up, sanding, and finishing. This pace ensures that every board is made with the level of detail and quality it deserves.
A: Absolutely. Many of our designs can be recreated in your preferred size and wood combination. Each one will still be unique because of the natural grain of the wood.
A: Occasionally, yes. From time to time we’ll create one-of-a-kind boards just to explore new designs. When they’re available, they’ll be listed alongside our made-to-order options.
A: Maple, walnut, and cherry are the primary hardwoods we use because their tight grain structure makes them ideal for food safety and long-term durability. On occasion, we incorporate accent woods such as purpleheart, zebrawood, or padauk to add visual interest and contrast. These species are used minimally in designs, since their more open pores aren’t as well-suited for full cutting surfaces.
A: A little care goes a long way. Hand wash only, never soak, and refresh the surface with food-safe mineral oil when it looks dry. With proper care, your board can last a lifetime.
